About me

Hi! I am Sally Tyson, the designer behind Saladbomb Creative. I provide eye-catching, compelling and mission led branding, marketing materials and artwork to people just like you. I am passionate about helping you bring your ideas to life so that you can better communicate with your audience, in as visually exciting a way as possible.

I have been designing for small businesses and charities since 2011 when I took a break from my career as a clothing designer to have my daughter. What started as a few small jobs to “keep my hand in” on mat leave, has blossomed into a freelance business that I am so much more passionate about!

After gaining a BA in Printed Textiles in 1994, I began working as a graphic designer within the clothing industry and from there began designing apparel as well. For over 15 years, I worked with brands such as: Caterpillar, Coca-cola, Musto, Reebok, Rockport, Ellesse and Craghoppers. This gave me so much experience within the corporate world and I gained an incredible insight into how big brands design, develop and protect their brand identity.

Shortly before I became a mother, I taught myself to crochet, creating lots of items for my unborn daughter. At one point, when she was really wee, I had a small business making baby blankets and crochet accessories and that’s where the name Saladbomb derives from (bit of a long story… ask me about it sometime!) God KNOWS where I found the time! Here my passion for colour influenced my work, my most popular item was a rainbow blanket. Eventually I ended up teaching crochet classes too, no prizes for guessing who designed the flyers! But as a designer/maker, I have first hand experience of running a small creative business. I know how hard it can be to hand over creative aspects of your business to someone else and how hard it is trying to fill all the roles, knowing when to DIY and when to outsource.

Now I use those skills to create intuitive and beautiful graphics for a wide range of clients in the North-West including: Storyhouse Chester, AgeUK Cheshire, Brightlife, Cazs Kitchen, The Workshop L22, Bluebell Fayre and Elderflower & Delilah.

I absolutely love the varied design work this brings to my desk. Working with the charity sector has given me a deeper understanding of accessibility within graphic design and the perameters that different audiences require.  And I believe my experience in the fashion and textiles world gives me a truly unique approach to design, particularly when it comes to the use of colour and iconography.

I am proficient in all Adobe Creative Suite programs and combine them depending on the project needs. I identify as a “life long” learner. I love learning new skills and taking on new challenges. Most recently I have learnt web design (you are looking at the results!) Then one of my clients was let down by her techie guy, I stepped into the breach to manage her site. Recently we redesigned it completely and I have also designed several sites for other clients.
