Massive shout out to this absolute queen of a woman, Caroline Hill of @cazskitchen

Business bestie and my first proper client.. cake slinger extraordinaire, queen of comfy pants, denizen of dressie up boxes and "tireless"* community champion. We've had a lot of fun over the years (this photo is from back before either of our businesses were a twinkle in our eyes!)

*Tbh she's not tireless, she's absolutely knackered, but you'd never know it! 💪🏼

She's just told me it's been ten years since she opened Cazs Kitchen, the best little cake shop in the north west and while Cazs does provide the best cake you will ever taste, she does so much more than that.

She dishes out cake and sympathy on a regular basis, was the instigator of the St Johns Rd Xmas party events, has always got some sort of charity collection going on at the shop and is consistently trying to make our community better whether that's for an individual or trying to give the council a kick up the arse. 😉

She's a true community leader and an awesome friend. Hats off to you Caz! 😘😘😘😘

Realizing you're heading the wrong way can be quite profound... especially in with hindsight!

When I applied for a PGCE in Design, I had been working in the fashion industry for over 5 years.

I hadn't really found it fullfilling or rewarding and was concerned about the industries impact on the planet.

I had enjoyed training junior designers in CAD as part of my role so I thought that teaching was the answer. That helping young people get in touch th their creativity would be a better way for me to use my own in a positive way.

At first I LOVED the PGCE, especially the practical workshops we did to come up with projects we could use in our teaching plans.

But as soon as I got back into a high school environment I realised I had made a HUGE mistake…

I wasn't sleeping, I was MASSIVELY over thinking every lesson, I didn't feel confident (despite all outward appearances, my tutor told me I was doing great) and I HATED being in school.

It’s no surprise really. I didn't enjoy highschool as a student and I didn't like it any better as a teacher.

I soon realised that school was not the right environment for me... I didn't know how long it would take for me to get comfortable with teaching, and I couldn't cope with the anxiety in the meantime.

So I "quit"... And 3 months later I had moved to the North West to take a design role that payed better than my previous senior role had paid!

Some people might see this as a failure and some might say it was brave.

I know I learnt a lot about myself through the experience and looking back I am so grateful I listened to my gut as I think I would have been miserable as a teacher.

I still didn’t find my true path back in the clothing industry but that path brought me to where I am today, helping mission driven businesses to have a greater positive impact through visually accessible design!

Not only are Impact Reports one of my favourite things to do in terms of design... (Colourful infographics and content Tetris! What's not to like?)

But I also get to see the amazing positive impact my clients have on the world!

But Sal… What is Visual Accessibility, I hear you cry!? 🤣

Visual accessibility refers to designing content in a way that is easy to see, read, and understand for people with disabilities.

This includes people with visual impairments, colour vision deficiency, or cognitive neurodivergence such as dyslexia or ADHD.

Design decisions that can affect visual accessibility include things like:

👁️ The colours you choose to use and how you combine them together

👁️ The fonts that you choose and how you format them

👁️ The way you layout your content and how you combine different elements

👁️ The additional or supporting methods you use for getting your message across such as captions and alt text.

This subject has become increasingly important to me when I started exploring what I could do to make my business more accessible online.

Now I know I have an advantage; design is what I do. This means fixing the visual aspects for me is easier.

BUT you don’t need to be a designer to make your design more accessible.

Vulnerability post incoming! 😬😬😬

I've been doing something today that is probably my LEAST favourite thing in the world.

And it's not even my accounts! 🤣🤣🤣

Today I've been recording the intro videos for my mini course on visual accessibility and I admit I am finding it really hard. 🙈

I am quite happy chatting to people on zoom even if that's being recorded and also really took to reels when they first came out (remember them? haven't posted one for aaaages!)

But straight up taking to camera is my absolute Achilles heel... It's just 'cringe' as the kids say.

BUT I am having to get over myself because everything else about the course is pretty much done and has been for months.

So if I don't do these videos, I can't get it out there into the world... Helping mission driven business owners to ensure their content is visually accessible!

So today I bit the bullet and recorded two of them and the others WILL get done tomorrow.

(If you want to see me making a tit of myself on camera then you'll just have to buy it won't you?)
